studio statement
"Society is not made for the artist, but the artist for society. Art must promote the development of human consciousness and the improvement of the social order" (G. Plekhanov, Art and Social Life, 1912).
Art must serve the revolution. And the revolution, if it is to succeed, must be well-designed. It must offer not only the material, economic and political, betterment of humanity, but it must also promise a future that is far more beautiful, more design-focused and creative, more aesthetically diverse and interesting than the bleak horizons promised to us by capitalism.
From its inception, Peace, Land, and Bread has promoted the foundational intersection of design and scholarship, arts and theory, in a way that has pushed the field forward, causing socialism to re-examine and re-embrace its lengthy history of the avant-garde—the creative, generative, exploratory impetus of the artistic dimensions of life, politics, and practice.
